Victoria

cittadella2

The capital city of Gozo is Victoria, also known as Rabat. It is the main centre of trade and traffic on the island. The old town centre has several architecturally interesting buildings such as the Church of St. George and the Banca Guiratale. The central square in Victoria is called “Piazza Independenza”. In the morning it is the scene of a busy market (“It-Tokk) from sunrise to 13.00hrs everyday including Sunday, and in the evening it is pleasant to stroll there. The town is strongly dominated by its Citadel, the Gran Castello, built on one of the many flat-topped hills. Most of the buildings inside the Citadel are in ruins, but the Old Courts of Law and the Old Governor’s Palace are still used as the Law Courts of Gozo. Also there, are the Old Prisons with the Armoury of the Knights, the Archaeological Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Folklore Museum. The Cathedral with the Bishop’s Palace and the Cathedral Museum dominate the Citadel.
